How Medicine Was Practiced in the 1860s
Speaker: Richard Best · Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium, 2345 Fourth Street
Richard Best took members back to an era when many doctors trained by “reading medicine” under a practicing physician. Drawing on period physicians’ manuals and consultations with modern physicians, surgeons, a pharmacist, and Dittrick Museum of Medical History curator Jim Edmonson, he presented 1860s surgical instruments, splints, and remedies. He explained the medical theories of the day, shared anecdotes, and demonstrated how pills were rolled by hand. The program was free and open to the public.
